DJI Ronin-M Review

As more and more stabilisation systems aren't being brought out there is still some top contenders for the best. One of the first and best is the 3 axis gimbal by DJI called the Ronin-M. There is obviously cheaper options such as the Came-TV version and smaller options such as the DJI Osmo however this system is probable one of the best built and best quality 3 axis gimbal systems around.

The set up of the Ronin can be done in around 10-15 minutes once you have has practice at doing so and then once balanced should be fine for the rest of the shoot. However, if you knock the camera, take it off or change the lens then the whole thing will need to be re-balanced to get the best effect from it.

The Ronin uses what DJI call an 'intelligent battery' which is a a 3400mAh LiPo that is listed as lasting up to six hours. One reason for its name is that it acts as a counter weight and the other is how long it lasts. It has been known to be used all day beyond 6 hours and still not drop to 0% or die on the user.Sometimes the roll axis on the gimbal will start to drift off however this can easily be fixed by restarting the system.

The Ronin also comes with a separate control. This control allows you to have a secondary camera operator whilst the other person focuses on the shot. This can be very helpful in fast speed situation so that the person holding the camera doesn't have to constantly look into the screen.

Some people may think that the price of this is too high or it is too much for them, however, for the equipment you are getting it is not for a beginner film maker. I am lucky enough to be able to use one and I know that it is quite hard to get used to.

The Ronin can be quite heavy if used for a while however a stand is provided so you can put it down whenever you need to without needed to set up again or re-balance.

Price: £1199.99

Pros:

- Easy to use

- Quite quick to set up once you have got the hang of it

- Very smooth footage if used and set up correctly

- Reasonable price for what you are receiving

- For what it is, it is lightweight

- Very good battery life

Cons:

- Roll axis sometimes goes off slightly

- Sometimes hard to balance however any gimbal will take a long time to do so.

- Sometimes the bars loosen however this is with hard use.
